Together we fill out a brief form stating your name and contact information as well as the intended use of the appraisal.

We will then briefly explain to you the grading criteria for diamonds and/or colored gemstones, so that you will have a basic understanding of how the quality of a gemstone relates to its value. This will help you to understand the evaluation and valuation processes that we will be performing on your jewelry item.

We explain the evaluation and valuation processes as they are being conducted before your eyes. We walk through the process with you step by step. We are happy to answer any questions you might have during the appraisal process.

If you choose to do so, we offer the unique opportunity to watch your appraisal from start to finish, while sitting directly across from us. This opportunity gives you the security and peace of mind because, your jewelry never leaves your sight.

Step Two: What Happens Next?

Once we receive your jewelry, before we do anything, we sort and organize your pieces to assure that no pieces are lost or go unaccounted for. Then each individual piece is cleaned using traditional cleaning procedures to ensure accurate testing, free of charge.

Diamond, Colored Gemstone, and Pearl Grading:

Most Diamonds, Colored Gemstones, and Pearls are graded on the following criteria (if applicable): Clarity, Color, Carat Weight, Cut Proportions, Cut Grade, Fluorescence, Enhancement, and other special criteria if necessary.

Clarity:  The internal characteristic, or inclusions, will be observed under a high-powered gemological microscope which will be used to map the location and type of inclusion on a plot diagram. The piece will be given a clarity grade determined using the GIA clarity grading system, which will be noted in the detailed report.

Color analysis: The amount of inherent color in your diamond will be evaluated and compared to GIA master graded diamonds under proper diamond grading lamps, as well as natural lighting. A letter grade for your color type using the GIA color grading system will be assigned . We have a full set of master graded stones for comparison, by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

Carat Weight: If your diamond is mounted, the carat weight is estimated by using a standard formula based on your stone’s particular cut. If your stone is unmounted, it will be weighed directly on a digital carat weight scale. The weight is noted in the report.

Cutting Proportions: The proportions of your diamond’s cut are evaluated. The stones are then measured by taking the diameter and the depth of your diamond, with the results being recorded in millimeters.

Cut Grade: A cutting class is assigned based on the stones facets proportions.

Fluorescence: Your diamond will be tested for a reaction to longwave and shortwave ultraviolet light.

Enhancements: Any and all enhancements that are detectable by gemological testing.

Note:

Diamond Grading: Only diamonds weighing over half a carat receive a detailed report.

Step Three: Ensuring that your Jewelry will be Identifiable

Each piece, either mounted or unmounted, is individually inspected with every aspect of its uniqueness being thoroughly inspected and recorded.

Mounting Attributes:

A complete evaluation of the mounting is done and described in detail within the final report. Each piece of jewelry will be weighed, measured and described in detail.
